Re: Submerged towns..
Hi folks -
Just to put the record straight (I hope!) -
Dunwich itself (the submerged medieval village) - is not protected. What is
protected is the wreck site on Dunwich Bank.
The only mechanism for protecting the village site is the 'Ancient Monuments
and Archaeological Areas Act' - which 'English Heritage' have not yet used in a
maritime context (although they could 'cos it's provisions now extend out to
the twelve-mile limit!).
The same act was neatly used by 'Historic Scotland' to schedule the area in
Scapa Flow contaning some of the 'High Seas Fleet' - but it also maintains
public (diver) access.
The list may not be aware that the whole matter of maritime heritage is under
review. If you have not already done so, I recommend you check out
http://www.culture.gov.uk
and search for 'Protecting our Marine Historic Environment: Making the System
Work Better'(A Downloadable pdf file). You can also get at it through search
engines.
This does not just relate to England - it covers Wales and Scotland too.
This is a public consultation document, the eventual aim of which is to
modernise the aproach to the subject. *Everyone* can have a say.
Recommended - but there again I'm somewhat biased!
